COVID 19 has impacted so many things. While I won’t use this post to dive to deeply into that (we’re all living it now so we’re all quite familiar) I do want to talk about the Texas State Fair. We all know by now that this event that we’ve all sewn into our yearly family and friends tradition will not take place this year. This event housed big football game rivalries, top musicians at concerts, the car show, games, prizes and of course…..The Food! We usually wait until this one time of year to indulge in the different offerings the state fair has, but since we won’t get to do that in 2020 lets explore some places where we can get our state fair fix all year long.
In this series each week we will explore popular fair food in the Dallas Ft. Worth area as well as explore former state fair vendors to see what projects they are working on now. Be sure to bookmark this page and come back each week to see what places we’ll be adding next.
We’re going to get things started with the infamous Funnel Cake!
This thin crispy donut like treat with mounds of powdered sugar on top is undeniably a fan favorite. You will spot these things being enjoyed by most fair goers as you walk around. My first stop on my Fair Faves Year Round tour landed at Kinsley’s Ice Cream and Funnel Cake Parlor. I had a difficult time choosing from flavors like Mama’s Old Fashion Peach Cobbler and Birthday Cake, but I finally decided to go with the Pecan Praline Funnel Cake. It comes with that familiar powdered sugar we all know and love but it gets an upgrade with drizzles of caramel goodness, chopped pecans and a scoop of ice cream. Who needs the fair when you can get this instead? For more on Kinsley’s including the service and other delicious options on their menu check out my post here.
One of the very Fair themed fried foods I can remember trying were the fried oreos. Oreos were one of my favorite cookies growing up, so I imagined having them fried would be even better. I was right! Just steps away from the State Fair of Texas is a Dallas gem, SouthSide Steaks and Cakes. You can find odes to South Dallas all throughout the menu, but the thing that drew me in was all of the unique fried food options you can find year round like the Fried Oreos, Fried Cinnamon Rolls and much more. Read more about SouthSide Steaks and Cakes and the other goodies I’ve tried here.
What fair fave will we feature next? Be sure to come back next week. See you soon!
