Just steps away from the State Fair of Texas is another Dallas classic, SouthSide Steaks & Cakes. From the moment you walk in you’re greeted by music that will have you reminiscing to the good old days with classics ranging from My Side Piece by Pokey Bear to You by Jesse Powell. Tables have been removed for now and strict social distancing and mask requirements are being enforced. The service is down south hospitality that makes you feel like it’s your auntie or favorite cousin behind the register and cooking up the food. Let me be clear, SouthSide Steaks & Cakes is #BFDApproved!
The menu features an extensive selection. If you get wings (and I think you should) you can choose from a wide variety of flavors in the mild to spicy heat level. They specialize in cheesesteaks. You can get them classic or with chicken. The chicken philly is excellent. I recommend getting the steak and wings combo so you can try both and leave without having FOMO. You can get cheesesteak toppings on fries and onion rings as well. Burgers and Hood Tacos are another thing you’ve got to make space to try. While waiting on my food I was offered a red drink that tasted like the koolaid we grew up drinking but in slushy form. If they ever start selling that stuff by the gallon don’t judge me when you see me walking out with a few jugs in hand.
Now for the main attraction. No good meal ends without a sweet treat. SouthSide features classic funnel cakes or you can get your funnel cake loaded with special toppings like strawberries, oreos, chocolate drizzle e.t.c. You can also get your fried treats fix with fried cinnamon rolls, fried honey buns and fried oreos. The State Fair of Texas may be closed but Southside Steaks and Cakes is here to give you that fair food fix year round.
