Anytime I travel I have got to find great food to enjoy that is specific to the place I’m visiting. It’s always a bonus if that place happens to be a B.O.B. When preparing to visit Philly for my friend’s wedding I was excited to learn that Philadelphia Black Restaurant Week would be going on while I was there. I found one of the featured restaurants, Rose Petals Cafe, and decided that I would check it out during my stay.
The restaurant is conveniently located as soon as you step out of the Septa Chelten Station. It is decorated with a beautiful elegant interior that provides the perfect atmosphere for a date, family or friends outing. The service was top notch (and ya’ll know how important good service is to me). The waiter was very attentive, pleasant and helpful.
Rose Petals Cafe features a brunch menu with a variety of sweet and savory waffle options like the Waffle Quesadillas, Peanut Butter and Jelly Waffle, Spinach Waffle and Berry Fusion Waffle. I also discovered something I had never heard of, scrapple. My friend told me that scrapple was a Southern thing, and that it was a common meat to eat with breakfast when she was growing up. Come to find out scrapple is actually native to Philadelphia and a staple to those from that area. It is typically made of pork, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Rose Petals has a turkey scrapple.
I ordered the peanut butter waffle, and guess what ya’ll, they served hot syrup with me waffle! It is the ultimate waffle sin to serve cold butter and syrup with waffles so shout out to Rose Petals for doing the right thing. My waffle was fluffy and delicious. I had a side of soft scrambled eggs and off course scrapple. Scrapple is a slightly tangy blend of meat that’s packed together breaded and lightly fried. I enjoyed my first scrapple experience. My friend ordered the catfish and grits and tried turkey bacon for the first time. She was happy with her meal as well. She enjoyed it so much that she returned soon after with her now husband (who let me know that he enjoyed the restaurant as well.
If you are ever in the Philadelphia area I highly recommend trying Rose Petals Cafe. It is BFD Approved for sure. Their mission is to be a community based small business focused on providing decent jobs, quality food and extraordinary service. They certainly hit the nail on the head with it. Though I visited the Germantown location, they have recently opened a second location at Elkins Park.
